Departmental Completion and Success Rates Fall 2011

Completion Rates

A completer is defined as a student who remained in a course for the entire semester and received a grade.  In the Fall 2011 semester, 5313 students represented an enrollment of 18,526 class sections. Of those enrollments, 81% (15,010) of the grades were A, B, C, D, F, S, or U, representing the students who completed the semester and received a grade in the course.  Only 19% (3,515) were grades of W, or I for students who did not complete the course.  The highest completion rates were in cosmetology instructor where 100% of the enrolled students completed the courses.

Twenty-two departments had completion rates of 90% or above.  Thirty-three departments had completion rates between 70% and 90%.  Only nine departments had completion rates below 70%.

Success Rates

Successful completers in English and Math are defined as students who receive a grade of A, B, C, or S.  In all other areas, a successful completer is one who receives a grade of A, B, C, D, or S. Of the 15,010 completers in Fall 2011, 86% were successful using the above definitions.  There were seven departments with successful completion rates of over 90%.  The academic programs with at least 90% successful completion rates included music, respiratory therapy, real estate, child development, and nursing.  The technical programs with at least 90% successful completion rates were commercial art and cosmetology instructor.

Thirty-eight departments had successful completion rates between 70% and 89%.  Nineteen departments had successful completion rates below 70%.

Table 1 below indicates the numbers and percentages of completers and non-completers for the entire college, the academic division, and the technical division.  Table 2 indicates the numbers and percentages of successful and non-successful students among the completers for the entire college, the academic division, and the technical division.  Any student who withdrew from the class or received a grade of Incomplete was not included in Table 2.
