This week at Shelton State we were visited by Mary Francis Gibbons, the QEP Faculty Liaison in the Office of Planning and Research for Institutional Effectiveness at Richland College in Dallas, TX.  Prior to her Institutional Effectiveness role, Ms. Gibbons was an English Instructor for many years.  Richland College is the only Community College to date who has won the Malcolm Baldrige Award for Performance Excellence.  Jackie Beede, our Baldrige Coach, has served as a consultant to Richland College during their Baldrige journey.

Ms. Gibbons met with numerous groups of faculty and staff to discuss her experiences at Richland College involving student learning outcomes, imbedded assessment in instructional disciplines, action planning based on assessment results, program-level (programs as defined by SACS criteria means degrees such as AA, AS, AAS, and Certificates) student learning outcomes, and assessment of student learning outcomes based on breadth of experience across the curriculum.  Ms. Gibbons emphasized that assessment should drive action plans, making data-informed decisions, and assessing to improve what we are doing rather than to prove how good we are doing.  She encouraged the use of assessment results to drive improvement.

Ms. Gibbons played an integral part in Richland College’s integration of the Baldrige Education Criteria for Performance Excellence into all facets of college operations.  To learn more about Richland College’s Baldrige journey that led to the Malcolm Baldrige Award in 2005, we invite you to review the attached journal article.
