Each year, I look forward to Honors Day as it provides an opportunity to commemorate the many accomplishments of our students. The dedication, determination, and will to succeed exemplify the spirit of Shelton State Community College. Congratulations in advance to each of you for your achievements.

CATEGORIES OF AWARDS

The following is a list of awards that have been given in past Honors Day ceremonies. ONLY the College Awards, Foundation,  Transfer Scholarships, and Alumni Association contain applications. The Excellence in Academics and Leadership, Academic Division, and Career Technical Division awards are nominated by each area and selected by committee.

  • President’s List - The President's List designation is accorded to any student who earns a 4.0 G.P.A. while enrolled full-time. These students have been named to the President's List at least twice
  • Phi Theta Kappa - Phi Theta Kappa was established in 1918 for the purpose of recognizing and encouraging scholarship among two-year college students. Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for “the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship of scholars, and for the stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”

Dr. and Mrs. John Todd III Awards -
The late Dr. John N. Todd III and Mrs. John N. Todd sponsor four awards to recognize outstanding accomplishments, achievements, and performance in the classroom, college, and community by Shelton State Community College faculty, support staff, and administrative staff.

The Outstanding Technical Student Award is named for Mr. Harold I. James, president of Shelton State Technical College from 1951-1976. The recipient of the
Harold I. James Outstanding Technical Student Award is selected based on accomplishments in the classroom and workplace.

The Special Achievement Award is named after Mr. Norman C. Cephus, president of Fredd State Technical College from 1982-1990. The recipient of the Norman C. Cephus Special Achievement Award  is selected based on academic achievement, involvement in campus and community activities, technical recognition, and job-related activities.

The Outstanding Freshman Award is named for Dr. Thomas E. Umphrey, president of Shelton State Community College from 1988-2000. The recipient of the Thomas E. Umphrey Outstanding Freshman Award is selected based on outstanding academic achievement and involvement in campus activities.

The Outstanding Sophomore Student Award is named for Dr. Leo Sumner, president of Shelton State Community College from 1976-1988. The recipient of the Leo Sumner Oustanding Sophomore Award is selected based on outstanding academic performance, school involvement, and community service. It is the highest honor a student can earn at Shelton State Community College. This is considered the College’s most prestigious student award.

The Outstanding Technical Student Award is named for Mr. I.W. Mitchell. The recipient of the  
I.W. Mitchell Outstanding Technical Student Award  must be enrolled in one of the technical programs on the C.A. Fredd Campus, and is selected based on academic achievement, involvement in campus and community activities, technical recognition, and job-related activities.
 

Applications may also be picked up on the Martin Campus in the office of the Dean of Students office, Student Organizations office, and the Counseling Center. On the C.A. Fredd Campus they may be picked up in the Lewis Library and the Main Office.
