STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
 
Shelton State Community College is a public open-admission comprehensive community college whose primary purpose is to provide accessible postsecondary education, training and community educational opportunities. 
 
SCOPE  
Shelton State Community College offers service at two approved campuses, the Martin Campus and the C.A. Fredd Campus, and is designated as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). The College is home to the West Alabama Center for Workforce Development as well as the Shelton State Adult Education/Career Readiness Program and enjoys the distinction of being the Alabama Community College of the Fine Arts. 
Shelton State recognizes the activities listed below as specific components of its purpose. 
  1. Provide general education programs at the level of the first two years of college. 
  2. Provide qualified teaching, supported by adequate facilities, in a climate conducive to learning. 
  3. Provide educational programs to prepare students for transfer to upper-division college programs or to specialized linkage programs. 
  4. Provide career/technical and specialized workforce education and training programs through which students may acquire job skills for employment and workers may upgrade job skills. 
  5. Provide developmental education to help students acquire the competencies necessary for success in college-level courses. 
  6. Provide a library of print and non-print materials and services to support all instructional areas. 
  7. Provide a broad range of student support services. 
  8. Encourage student participation in the life of the College. 
  9. Educate students to live and work in a global environment. 
  10. Promote constructive relationships with business, government, and industry.
  11. Cooperate with the community in educational, cultural, and civic projects appropriate to school policies and procedures. 
  12. Respond, when possible, to other educational needs of the community by offering courses and workshops which provide personal, civic, and cultural enrichment.
  13. Encourage high quality performance of College personnel through professional development.
  14. Maintain a comprehensive planning system to promote institutional effectiveness.
  15. Remain flexible and responsive to innovative educational enterprises that have potential benefits for the future for the College and the community it serves.
  16. Provide educational access and opportunities responsive to the needs of a culturally diverse community.
  17. Integrate current technology into all operations, services, and functions of the college.
  18. Provide a multifaceted Adult Education program.

Goal One
To provide excellent, accessible education and training to meet the needs of a
diverse student population.
 
Objectives:
1.1.   Provide general education programs at the level of the first two years of college.
1.2.   Provide educational programs to prepare students for transfer to upper division college programs or to specialized linkage programs.
1.3.   Provide career/technical and specialized training and educational programs through which students may acquire job skills for employment and workers may enhance job skills.
1.4.   Provide developmental education to help students acquire the competencies necessary for success in college-level courses.
1.5.   Provide qualified teaching in an environment which encourages students to become responsible learners.
1.6.   Provide specialized education and training programs in the fire service and emergency medical training throughout the state as needed.
1.7.   Provide a library of print and non-print material and services to support all instructional areas.
1.8.   Provide a broad range of student support services.
1.9.   Educate students to live and work in a global community.
1.10. Provide for the full and effective integration of Academic and Technical Education.
1.11. Achieve the highest level of accreditation and/or certification for all units, programs, and functions of the College.
1.12. Provide advising which meets the educational needs of its students.
1.13. Provide educational opportunities in the arts as the Alabama Community College of the Fine Arts.
1.14. Continue the full consolidation of the C.A. Fredd Campus into the College.
1.15. Operate the Center for Workforce Development in active response to the professional needs of the community.
1.16. Operate all units, programs, and services of the College in full compliance with all relevant and applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and/or guidelines.
1.17. Provide effective administration and management of the College and of all its various resources.
 
Goal Two
To foster sustainable growth of the College and its resources in the pursuit of
excellence and continuous improvement.
 
Objectives:
2.1.   Maintain a comprehensive planning system to promote institutional effectiveness.
2.2.   Increase enrollment and improve retention in both credit and non-credit courses and programs.
2.3.   Develop innovative curriculum offerings which will attract additional students to the College.
2.4.   Create and maintain an effective and broadly supported program of seeking external support through federal, state and private grants and contracts.
2.5.   Create and maintain an effective and broadly supported program of marketing and promotion.
2.6    Increase awareness of the associate degree and its value and promote achievement of the degree among SSCC students.
 
Goal Three
To incorporate technology into all facets of the College in order to assure the
most effective use of its facilities and resources.
 
Objectives:
3.1.  Incorporate technology into all instructional operations and functions of the College.
3.2.  Incorporate technology into all services, procedures and functions of the College.
3.3.  Develop a plan which incorporates distance learning to the highest benefit of the College and its students.
 
 
Goal Four
To provide a caring and cooperative atmosphere which emphasizes service
and values the efforts of every person.
 
Objectives:
4.1.   Promote and practice pride in all aspects of the College.
4.2.   Infuse the principles of continuous quality improvement into all aspects of the College.
4.3.   Promote the TEAMSpirit quality movement.
4.4.   Provide students with opportunities for aesthetic and cultural enrichment and physical self-improvement.
4.5.   Provide a full range of physical facilities and services on College campus locations to support intramural and intercollegiate athletic activities.
4.6.   Encourage student participation in the life of the College.
4.7.   Encourage high quality performance of college personnel through professional development, including opportunities for process improvement and customer service/satisfaction.
4.8.   Provide a safe, secure, and healthy environment for all operations of the College.
 
 
Goal Five
To engage the community in productive relationships which are responsive to
its educational needs.
 
Objectives:
5.1.   Promote mutually productive relationships with business, government and industry.
5.2.   Respond, when possible, to other educational needs of the community by offering classes and workshops that provide personal, civic and cultural enrichment.
5.3.   Cooperate with the community in educational, cultural, and civic projects appropriate to policies and procedures of the College.
5.4.   Remain flexible and responsive to innovative educational enterprises that have potential benefits for the future of the College and the community it serves.
5.5.   Provide educational access and opportunity to meet the needs of a culturally diverse community.
