Louise Boyd Lewis Library - Fredd Campus
In addition to the main library on the Martin Campus, Shelton State Community College offers library services in the Louise Boyd Lewis Library on the C.A. Fredd Campus, located on Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard. This branch houses over 2,500 general interest books and numerous current periodical subscriptions. It is connected to the main library through the college network and through the electronic library catalog, so that all information about library resources is available on the Fredd Campus.
In the Lewis Library, the collection focuses on programs based on that campus. In addition, a basic reference collection is housed in the branch library. Because of its status as an Historically Black College and University (HBCU) campus, Black history and culture are a focus of collection development for books and periodicals (although related materials are also available in the Martin Campus library). Shelton State Community College is a member of the HBCU Library Alliance , which offers a twofold benefit to the college: first, the purpose of the Alliance is to "ensure excellence in HBCU libraries" and to "enhance member libraries"; second, the Alliance is a consortium that "supports the collaboration of information professionals dedicated to providing an array of resources designed to strengthen" HBCU institutions.
Library hours on the Fredd campus are as listed below. Additional help is available by phoning the library faculty and staff on the main campus (See Library Staff Directory).
Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon
Library cards are available for students and employees at the circulation desk in the Lewis Library. With valid library cards, students and employees may also use the UA Libraries or the Stillman College Library. To use these libraries, cards must be acquired and stamped for the current semester. This can be done in just a few moments at the circulation desk in each library.
Faculty who wish to place items on Reserve, may contact Jean Mack at ext. 2622 or stop by the library office on the Fredd Campus. Items may also be placed on Reserve at the main campus library. To do so, contact Tamara Gainous at ext. 2248 or drop by the AV/Reserves desk. Reserves can be housed on either campus, depending on the instructor's preference. Coin-operated copy machines are available in both libraries. The machines on both campuses accept change and bills.
The library's online catalog is available on the Fredd Campus to allow students and instructors to search the library's catalog to identify books, periodicals, audiovisuals, and pamphlets located on either campus. In addition, computer workstations are connected to the campus network and to the Alabama Virtual Library to provide access to databases available to the library and to Internet/WWW. Effective January 3, 2007, access to computers in the Lewis Library on the Fredd Campus is restricted to students currently enrolled in classes at Shelton State or to potential students who are in the process of seeking information about Shelton State or financial aid. Students who wish to use computers in the Lewis Library must show a current ID.
To schedule audiovisual use for items that are not already housed in the shop or department, contact Jean Mack at ext. 2622. For additional AV information, contact Jean Epps at ext. 2670. Laptops and computer/data projection equipment are available on each campus. Contact Jean Mack to schedule it.
Due to space constraints, individual and group viewing are no longer possible in the library on the Fredd Campus. This service, however, is available on the Martin Campus if students from the Fredd Campus need extended hours. Ask a member of the library staff if you would like to schedule group or individual viewing at the Martin Campus.
