MAGAZINES, JOURNALS, & NEWSPAPERS

The Shelton State Libraries provide off-campus access to its catalog and selected resources.  To use expanded features, library users may access the library's Advanced Search Catalog (Encore) with their library barcodes, available at any library desk or by email for eLearning students.

Your user name for Advanced Search (Encore) is your first and last name (in that order -- e.g., john smith).  Your barcode number appears on your library card.  You may also request your barcode by email (gjohnson@sheltonstate.edu ).

About periodicals and online databases available through the Shelton State Libraries

The Shelton State Libraries carry almost 400 current periodicals (magazines, journals, and newspapers) in traditional print format and continue to maintain selected titles in microfilm backfiles.  All subscription and backfile information is included in the library catalog, where you can search by title or subject for details.

On the Martin Campus, newspapers are shelved near the circulation desk and periodicals are shelved under the windows.  Back issues are stored in the Periodicals Room beside the Copy Room.  All print, microfilm, or bound periodicals are shelved by title in alphabetical order.  On the Fredd Campus, newspapers are stored in a standing rack and current periodicals are stored in a circular floor stand.  No back issues are kept.

All online databases are available on campus with no login or password required.  Off-campus access is available for most of the databases as indicated below.  In general -- and for eLearning students in particular -- the best way to access databases when off campus is through the Advanced Search Catalog.  Remote access to the databases requires your name and library barocode.  If you do not know your library barcode, you may ask at any library desk and get a card with your barcode on it.  If you are an eLearning student who does not have classes on campus, you may email gjohnson@sheltonstate.edu for your barcode information.  After logging on with your library barcode (from the Advanced Search Catalog), enter your search term.  On the following screen, click on the name of one of the databases or the orange arrow in the "Articles & More" column on the right.  This will lead you directly to articles that appear in the database you selected.  You will see more details about what is ava ilable in these databases in the column on the left.
